Evelyn Joyce Leu Oliver 1929-1999

GOODRICH -- Evelyn Joyce Leu Oliver, 70, of Goodrich died Tuesday, Oct. 26, 1999, in Austin, where she lived for several years with her daughter, Linda Stuart.

She was born Feb. 2, 1929. A native of Houston, she ran the Mode-O-Day shop in Livingston for several years. She attended Schwab City Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her father, Ralph Leu, and her brother Jimmie Leu.

Survivors include her mother, Ruby M. Leu; daughter, Linda Stubart; son, Richard Spillman and his wife Paula; grandsons, Jason Whitney, and Jeff Knight and his wife Bonnie; great-grandsons, Justin Knight; brother, Billy Leu and his wife Cheryl; sister, Annette Stamps and her husband Vergil; niece Debbie Leu and great-niece, Sydney Leu; nephews Michael, Douglas, and Kyle Stamps; and numerous other loving relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 30, at Schwab City Baptist Church, followed by graveside services at Peebles Cemetery. Flowers may be sent to Schwab City Baptist Church.

James Carlton Lowe 1933-1993

LIVINGSTON -- Funeral services for James Carlton Lowe, 68, of Livingston were held Tuesday, July 20, 1993, from the Cochran Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Bill Skaar and Chaplain Gene Webb officiating. Internment followed in Menard Chapel Cemetery.

Mr. Lowe died July 17 at his residence in Livingston.

He was born Aug. 29, 1933 in Knight, the son of George Cooper Lowe and Mae Walters. On Sept. 26, 1948 he married the former Voncile Carpenter in Livingston.

Mr Lowe was a member of Livingston Masonic Lodge No. 14 AF&AM, VFW Post 8568, helped organize the Exxon Annuitant Club of East Texas and served on the board of directors of the Menard Chapel Cemetery Association. He served in the Pacific while in the U.S. Army, serving in a special division to land troops in amphibian tanks, Division 536. Mr. Lowe worked for Exxon Co. USA for 40 years in the Exportation Department as a data acquisition specialist. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Tyler.

Survivors include his wife, Voncile Lowe of Livingston; two sons, James and wife Sandy Lowe of Austin and George and wife Tammy Lowe of Houson; daughter, Debra Dawson of Tyler; sister Wilma Oliver of Livingston; five grandchildren, Matthew and wife Tanya Dawson, Same Lowe, Ben Lowe, David Dawson and Johnathan Lowe; one great-grandchild, Eric Dawson; and special niece Glenda Brown.

Paullbearers were James Carpenter, Fred Carpenter, William Carpenter, Claude Carpenter, Don Carpenter and Terry Carpenter. Honorary pallbearers were J.D. Todd, A.D. Summerall, Robert Frank, Clarence Floyd and members of 536 Division.

Military honors were provided by VFW Post 8568.

James Andrew Walters

LIVINGSTON -- Funeral services for James Andrew Walters, 89, of Livingston will be held at 2 p.m. Thrusday, Sept. 9, 1993, from the chapel of Pace Funeral Home, with Bro. William Bloodsworth officiating, assisted by Bro. Ernest Johnson. Internment will follow in Menard Chapel Cemetery.
Mr. Walters died Sept. 7 in Baptist Memorial Hospital, Liberty.
He was a life-log resident of Polk County.

Frances Louisa Oliver 1912-2007

July 31, 1912 - September 5, 2007

Funeral services for Frances Louisa Oliver, was  held Saturday, September 8,2007 at the Pace Funeral Home.  Visitation was Friday evening from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM,  Rev. Frank Hood and Rev. Harold Isaacs officiated.  Interment followed in  Peebles Cemetery.

Mrs. Oliver passed away  September 5,1007 in  Stafford, Texas, at the Oasis Lifestyle Assisted Living Home.  She was 95 years old.

Mrs. Oliver loved to travel, play cards and dominoes and especially enjoyed being around her grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her Husband, Jesse Oliver, her son Coy Oliver and her mother and father, Odie and James Boyd Riley.

Her survivors are her daughter-in-law, Justine Oliver of Sugarland and her grandchildren; Gary Oliver and wife Jeannette, Ricky Oliver and Wife Rosanne and Cathy Price and Husband Barry. Great-grandchildren Dianne Strom, Christine Taylor, Rebecca Price and Ben Price.

Lawrence Donald Jackson 1939-2001

LIVINGSTON -- Funeral services for Lawrence Donald “L.D.” Jackson, 61, were held Monday, Aug. 6, 2001 from the Cochran Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Tony Gilbert officiating. Internment followed in Menard Chapel Cemetery.

Mr. Jackson died Saturday, Aug. 4, at his residence in Livingston.

He was born Oct. 2, 1939 in Livingston, the son of Jessie Archie Jackson and Damaras Murphy Jackson. Mr. Jackson Was a Master Mason in Trinity Lodge No. 14 in Livingston and was a member of Providence Baptist Church, Livingston.

Survivors included his wife, Patsy Ann Jackson of Livingston; son, Lawrence “Bubba” Donald Jackson Jr. of Livingston; mother-in-law Esther Hann of Livingston; brothers, C.B. “Curly” Jackson of Houston, Archie Jackson of Coldsprings, Bill Jackson of Holly Grove, Hewy Jackson of Porter and Claud Jackson of High Island and sisters, Evon Roberts of Schwab City and Mary Jane Price of Providence.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Loyd Jackson and sister, Ivene Warren.

Mrs Walters died Sept. 16 in Parkway Hospital

She was born Sept 18, 1926 in Polk County, the daughter of Henry Grady McCaghren and Alverta Matthews McCaghren. On July 14, 1946 she married Reuel B. Walters in Houston. Mars Walters was a homemaker and member of First United Pentecostal Church.

Survivors included her husband, Reuel B. Walters of Livingston; daughters and sons-in-law, Linda Nell and Lamar Reed of Port Neches and Nelva James and John Cain of Livingston; sons and daughter-in-law, Bentley Ray and Susan Walters of Humble; grandsons, Peyton Reed and David Reed of Port Neches, James Walters and Brian Walters of Humble, and Grady Allen Cain of Livingston; granddaughter, Rebecca Reed or Port Neches; father and stepmother, Henry Grady and Ann McCaughren of Livingston; and numerous other relatives and friends.

Sally Walters Massey - In Her Own Words

This is my life:

I was born Zelda Walters (“Sally” is a nickname) 09-30-1927 in Polk County, Livingston, Texas. My father William Allen Walters married Ida Mae Munson. To this union was born four sons and four daughters. They maintained a devout religious background in our home. I graduated in 1944 at the age of 16 and attended Durham Business School. I was secretary to the Polk County School Superintendant’s office for 6 years. In 1946 I married Leveritt Massey, a native of Beaumont, Texas. To this union was born three sons. We have eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren. I was employed with Viltrup / Dearmond Insurance Company for two years. We then owned Grangerland Grocery for five years. I was then employed with Equifax for 13 years as a steno typist and head of the steno pool. They are fact finding organization for business decisions. I retired in 1983. we have entertained four foreign exchange students from Spain and France for summer vacations since 1990. We visited one of the families in France for ten days and plan to visit all of them five years ago was cancelled when cancer of the colon was discovered. We became personal friends with a Russian family from Kiev about ten years ago. We visited regularly for about a year, helping them with the English language. The first full sentence they learned was Matress Mac’s “Save you money.” We have friends in Wales and was there two weeks.
I enjoy my piano, organ, gardening, and quilting.

Dorothy Fae McAlister 1990

LIVINGSTON -- Funeral Services for Dorothy Fae McAlister, 67, of Lake Jackson were held Friday, Dec. 28, 1990 from the Cochran Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Fred Chambers officiating. Internment will follow in Peebles Cemetery.

Mrs. McAlister died Tuesday, Dec. 25, in Brazosport Memorial Hospital in Lake Jackson. She was a member of Friendship Assembly of God Church in East Bernard.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Bill Henderson of Lake Jackson; father Charlie Walters of Livingston; sister, Wanda Ferguson of East Bernard; two grandsons, James Henderson and wife Sheila of Great Lakes, Ill. and William Henderson of California; four granddaughters, Kathy Boddie and Husband Doyle, and Rebecca Henderson, all of Lake Jackson, Mary Zambada of Angleton and Marty Lewis of Lufkin; five great-grandchildren and other relatives and many friends.

Pallbearers were Jimmy McDonald, Bob McDonald, Doyle Boddie, Reuel Walters, Johnny Yeats, and Perry Loftin. Honarary paulbearers were Bill Henderson, James Henderson, Dempsey Hickman, VictorGalloway and John Shirley.

Doris Arline Walters 1924-2000

LIVINGSTON -- Funeral services for Doris Arline Walters, 75, of Point Blank were held Saturday, Feb.19, 2000, from the Pace Funeral Home Chapel, with Dr. Ben Welmaker officiating. Internment followed in Peebles Cemetery on FM 1988.

Mrs Walters died Wednesday, Feb 16, in Huntsville.
She was born June 5, 1924 in Dussett, the daughter of Jesse Samuel Musgrove and Versie Harris Musgrove, both of whom preceded her in death. On Dec. 29, 1945 she married Henry Alvin Walters.

Survivors included her husband, Henry Alvin Walters of Point Blank; sons, James W Bridsont and wife Peggy of Shepherd, Henry R. Walters Sr. and wife Tomie of Houston, and Larry E. Walters and wife Donna of Big Sandy; daughter, Brenda K. Leger of Point Blank; brother, Kenneth Wayne Musgrove and wife Glada of Point Blank; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Jimmy Birdsong, Curtis A. Leger, Donnis Walters, Henry R. Walters, Randy Walters and Russell E. Walters. Honorary pallbearer was Kenny Whettleman.

COUPLE CELEBRATES 68TH ANNIVERSARY -- Alton and Edna Walters celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary with a family dinner at their home in Ace. They married on Jan 6, 1932 and are both Polk County natives. They lived in Houston for 26 years then retired and returned to their home in Ace in 1974. Their children are Sonja and Wally Asendorf of Georgetown, Darlene and Harold Wise of Canton and Sally Racki of Rye. They also have six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

LIVINGSTON -- Funeral services for Alton “Pappy” Walters, 92, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 17, 2000, from the Cochran Funeral Chapel, with John Brimacombe officiating. Internment will follow in Menard Chapel Cemetery.

Mr. Walters died Friday, July 14, at his residence in Livingston.

He was born Feb. 11, 1908 in Ace, the son of Henry and Exer Griffin Walters.

1. WALTER1 CHILES I was born 20 Mar 1608 in St. Mary, Redcliff Parish, Warrington, Somerset, England, and died 1653 in Jamestown, Virginia. He married ELIZABETH MAURY. She was born Abt. 1602 in Middlesex, England, and died 1672 in Jamestown, Virginia.

Bio of Colonel Walter Chiles, born in England 1608, died in Virginia 1653:
The first mention of the original Chiles emigrant to Virginia is found in the records of the High Court of Admiralty Examinations in England. In the record of Examination No. 301 dated 24 July 1637 the Witness was Walter Chiles of Bristol, a clothworker age 29 who signed his own name to the document. He states that he was a passenger on the ship 'Blessing', of Falmouth and was employed to assist Henry Tuton, the ship’s purser. The ship was at James Town, Virginia for fourteen weeks. The date of Walter Chiles's first arrival in Virginia was probably 1636. 

Some six months later after the 24 Jul 1637 Examinations, Walter Chiles, had outfitted his own ship and by 1 Mar 1638 was again in Virginia. On that date he was awarded 400 acres in Charles City County. The award stipulation was: “50 acres being due for his own personal adventure, 50 for his wife Elizabeth, 50 for his son William, 50 for son Walter and two hundred for the transportation of four other persons, viz: Henry Fulton, John Govey John Shaw and Sarah Cole, to the colony.” The location of the land was Westerly upon the Appamattuck River, Northerly upon land of Edward Tunstall and Southerly towards the falls. 

The records of 20 Oct 1642 granted Walter Chiles 613 acres in Charles City County, “At Appamattocke River, beginning at the upward bounds of Mr. Tunstall’s land and adjoining William Sanders. Due by virtue of a former patent and transportation of 4 persons:.....(page 1) 

We do not know the name of Walter Chiles's ship in 1638, but the name of his ship in 1652 was, “The Fame of Virginia”, and it was engaged in trade with Holland and England. 

He was chosen Speaker of the Assembly of the House of Burgesses Jun/July 6, 1652 but he refused at that time because he was having a dispute with the authorities over his ship. (see page 2). He was a member of the 1641 Virginia Assembly. He was held in high esteem by the colonists. He represented Charles City in the House of Burgesses in 1642 and 1643, represented James City in 1645, 1646, 1649, and in 1652 was elected Speaker of the House. Other records are missing so he may have been a representative for other years. 

Governor William Berkeley, in 1649, sold the home known as the “Kemp House” to Walter Chiles for the sum of 26,000 pounds of tobacco. It was the first brick house in America and was located in Jamestown.

Historical Notes for Henry Chiles Born 1669

  Henry died in 1720 in St. Paul's Parish, Virginia. He married first Margaret Littlepage and second Mary.

Information on Henry, his father Walter, and his grandfather Walter is from WALTER CHILES OF JAMESTOWN compiled by Joanne Chiles Eakin. 

--Among the “Public Officers in Virginia in 1702” was Henry Chiles. He was a Justice of the Peace from New Kent County on 18 Jul 1702. 

--A King William Courthouse deed dated 20 Nov 1702 records Henry Chiles, Gent, of New Kent, purchasing 492 acres on the Pamunkey River from Richard Littlepage, Gent, of New Kent, and Frances his wife. It is a three page deed and very full in describing the transaction. 

--On the Quit Rent Rolls (Tax Rolls) Henry was listed as owning 700 acres of land in King William County in 1704 and also 700 acres in New Kent County in the Parish of St. Peter and St. Paul. (pg. 17) 

--Henry married first Margaret Littlepage, and 2nd Mary (last name unknown. who 2ndly married a Mr. Howe). 

--In 1671 there is a record of Henry in the Council Journal MSS when his father Walter, appears on behalf of his sons John and Henry regarding land in Westmoreland County on 4 April 1671. (pg. 16) 

--There is a deed in from Mary Howe, Orange Co., Virginia dated 17 Jun 1765 that mentions certain slaves left to her by will to the said Mary Howle (then Mary Chiles) will bearing the date 29 April 1718 by Henry Chiles. 

--The last record of Henry Chiles on the St. Paul’s Parish Vestry Book of Hanover Co. was : “At a Vestry held at ye lower Church ye 29 Oct. 1720. Mr. David Meriwether was admitted a Vestryman for this Parish in the room of Mr. Henry Chiles, lately deceased.” pg. 18) 

Copy of document in book of the Indenture 20 November 1673 between James Wadding, Susanna his wife, late the wife and executrix of Walter Chiles of James City aforesaid gentleman deceased, and John Page.....It mentions in the indenture (1649 Walter Chiles of James City aforesaid Gentleman, (father of the aforesaid Walter Chiles)....towards the end---”And in or about the year of our Lord, one thousand six hundred fifty and three, the said Walter Chiles, the father dyed (leaving the said Walter Chiles late husband to the said Susanna Wadding party to these parts) his eldest son and heir at law.....the fifteenth day of November Anno Domini one thousand six hundred seventy one he the said Walter Chiles the son, made his last will and testament in writing, and Susanna his then wife (now Susanna Wadding party to these presents) sole executrix thereof....Shortly after the making of the will the said Walter Chiles the son dyed. William Allen Walters - WWI

Yes, Daddy was in the army in WWI.  He didn’t get overseas because the war was over before he was through training.  His brothers, Charlie and Robert and cousin Watson (I think) did get overseas.  (Many years after he was gone Mama was able to get a pension for the children left at home because of his service.  This helped a lot.  She was left with 6 children at home when he died of pneumonia.  Inez had already graduated from high school and gone to Houston to secretarial school.  She had to drop out and go to work full time after Daddy died in 1940.)

Also not only did Julia and I graduate from college, so did Hollis and Ralph.  How Mama was able to provide funds, I’ll never know.  I know they did some work during and between semesters but she probably had to provide some also.

Macell

Zelda Sally Massey 1927-2008

We rejoice that Sally, 80, has taken up residence in her new heavenly home with her Lord and Savior after battling Lewy Body Dementia. Also welcoming her home were her husband, two brothers, father, mother, and many relatives and friends.
 
Funeral services will be held at Cashner Funeral Home in Conroe on Wednesday June 18 at 10:00am. Visitation will be Tuesday June 17 from 5:00 – 8:00pm.
 
Sally was raised in Polk County,Texas and graduated from Livingston High School. Sally and Raymond Leveritt Massey were married on June 2, 1946. They lived in the Grangerland area for over fifty years. Throughout her life Sally was devoted to the Assemblies of God Church as well as being a faithful giver to missions overseas. Sally and Leveritt once owned the Grangerland Grocery store and she later retired from the Equifax Company in Conroe. She also was a member and past president of the Cut ‘N Shoot Auxiliary Club. A wonderful legacy she left behind was all the quilts she made and gave to those she loved.

Her love and encouragement of others extended far beyond her family as many people held her in their hearts.

She was proceeded in death by her husband Raymond Leveritt Massey (Dec 25, 1922 – May 24, 2001); father William Allen Walters (September 06, 1894 – May 19, 1940); mother Ida Mae Munson (February 19, 1903 – March 18, 1986).

She is survived by 3 sisters: Inez Smith, Macell Millard (Bill), and Julia Krizak (Kenneth); 2 brothers: Reuel Walters (Anna) and Hollis Walters (Helen), 3 sons: Conan (Debra), Stevan (Liz), and Dade; a sister-in-law: Annie Mae Walters; 2 daughters-in-law: Susan Clepper Sutton (Hilton) and Elizabeth Massey; special extended family: Gonzalo Criado and a host of family and friends.

The family would like to express their deep appreciation to Patrick Teich of Teigoroc personal care home as well as the staff of Hospice Care of the Southwest. We also will never forget the many acts of kindness shown to her by many of you.

Rae Linn McBride Bailey

Mrs. Rae Linn Bailey, age 40, of Winston, GA passed away on Wednesday, June 11, 2008. She was born March 15, 1968 in Houston, TX. She was preceded in death by her father Bobby Lee McBride and her grandparents. Mrs. Bailey was a receptionist for A.R.S., Inc. She was a member of West Georgia Apostolic Church, where she was very active especially in the clowning and children’s ministry.

She is survived by her husband Paul Bailey; children, Chris Bailey, David Bailey, Kayla Bailey, Ryan Bailey, all of Winston, GA; mother Anna and Reuel Walters of Livingston, TX; brother Buddy and Karen McBride of Griffin, GA; sisters, Diana and Gene Brock of Griffin, GA, Bobbie Myers of Buffalo, NY; several nieces and nephews.

He has been married to his wife Rae Linn since 1988 and they have been on their honeymoon ever since. Together they have four children Chris, David, Kayla, and Ryan.
Their burden is to build a strong Apostolic church in West Georgia. Where every member of the body of Christ is active in ministry.

Ralph Junius Walters 1932-2002

Ralph J. Walters of Kennard died in the late hours of Tuesday, June 25, 2002 at the age of 70.
Survivors include his wife, Annie Currie Walters of Kennard; son William B. Walters and wife Amy of Spring; daughter, Margaret Walters Zirkle and husband Bryan of Euless; grandchildren, Ryan Walters, Katie Zirkle, and Avery Zirkle; brothers and sisters Inez Smith of Houston, Reuel Walters of Livingston, Sally Massey of Grangerland, Hollis Walters of Spring, Macell Millard of Sacramento, California, and Judy Krizak of Austin; numerous nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Mr. Walters faithfully served the Lord at Faith Tabernacle in Kennard for 12 years and First Assembly of God in Spring for 22 years, serving as deacon and treasurer in both churches.
Funeral services were held Friday, June 28, from the Callaway-Allee Memorial Chapel, with Rev. Carroll Bryant officiating. Internment followed in Ivie Cemetery.
Callaway-Allee Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Faith Tabernacle Church Building Fund, P.O.Box 98, Kennard, Texas 75847.

Henry Tolar born 1789 in Newburn Co., N.C., died 6 October 1867 in Tyler Co., TX. He married Kitsy Magee (daughter of Phillip Magee and Mary (Polly) Butler) 4 December 1812 in Marion Co., MS. Kitsy Magee was born 24 January 1878 in South Carolina and died 3 May 1853. Two children were born into this marriage: Nancy Tolar married Gilberg Shivers, and John Phillip Tolar married Canzetta Catherine Fussell (daughter of William Fussell, Jr. and Mary B. Morris).

Henry Tolar is listed on the 1820-1840 covington Co., MS census and tax rolls. In 1850 he is living in the household of his son, John Phillip Tolar in Simpson Co., MS. In 1860 he is living in the household of his daughter Nancy Tolar Shivers in Tyler Co., TX. Henry has a mark and brand registered in the Tyler County Clerk’s Office.

John Phillip Tolar was born 1 May 1815 in Amite Co., MS and died 30 October 1896 in Tyler Co., TX. He married Canzetta Catherine Fussell 3 October 1893 in Rankin Co., MS. John Phillip and Canzetta Catherine are buried in Mt. Pisgah Cemetery, Tyler Co., TX.

William Fussell

I have written about John Phillip Tolar and his wife Canzetta Fussell in a previous newsletter. This letter will be about Canzetta Fussell’s parent’s - William Fussell Jr. and his wife Mary B Morris.
William Fussell is the son of William Fussell, Sr. born July 26, 1755 in NC and Mary Wilson born Dec 25, 1762. William Fussell, Jr. was born 1798 in georgia and married Mary B. Morris, born in 1802 in Georgia, on September 1821 in Washington, Parish, LA.
William enlisted in the War of 1812 on December 23, 1814 at Covington Louisiana and served under Captain William Beekam Company, Colonel Thomas Warner Regiment and was discharged at Camp Navy Yard on February 24, 1815 serving a total of 64 days.. William stated on his pension application: “At the time of the Battle of New Orleans I was at Camp Navy Yard on the Chefunky about 7 miles from its mouth. Our command was then sent across the Mississippi to reinforce Gen. Morgan who was camped about 6 miles below New Orleans on the west side of the river. A few days after the Battle of New Orleans General Morgan was ordered by General Jackson to reinforce him upon a given signal by crossing the river, advance and attack the enemy below New Orleans. No signal was given and during the night I saw camp fires on the east bank of the river and carriages & cannon by the aid of the campfire and the next day learned it was the enemy.”
William applied for and received Bounty land donations (land given to soldiers for a specified time of enlistment). William’s bounty land was located in Rankin County, Mississippi. William was in Tyler County, Texas by 1874 according to the dates on his pension application. William applied for his pension and on January 30, 1875 was granted a monthly pension of $8.00 per month from February 14, 1871.
William Fussell’s will was filed on September 7, 1875 in Tyler County, Texas. The will was filed under Index Jacket Number X-359. I have been to Tyler County several times and all the County Clerks will tell me is “There is no will in the box and we can only surmise that someone took it.” John Phillip Tolar is given as administrator of William’s will.
John Findley, a descendent, told me that William Fussell, Jr. sometimes referred to as “Big Daddy Fussell” was buried in Justice Cemetery, Northwest of Warren, Tyler Co., Texas in an unmarked grave.
